What is Erate?
Erate, which stands for Education Rate, is a Federal Government program that provides up to $ 2.25 billion annually for schools and libraries across the nation.
The Erate program was authorized by Congress as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and signed into law by president Clinton in February 1996. Under this program schools and libraries are able to receive discounts on a broad range of services, including, but not limited to: phone bills (local and long distance), monthly Internet wiring and computer hardware. In recent surveys, 84% of schools across the nation have indicated that they plan to participate in the program.
In the first year of the program, the schools and libraries Division (the agency that administers the program) received over 30,000 applications for funding. The second year of the program saw an increase of 7% in the number of applications filed.
The program has been successful; schools and libraries across the nation, regardless of size, are able to utilize high speed Internet access and create virtual classrooms through discounts on distance learning services.
Nearly all public elementary and secondary schools, as well as most K-12 private and parochial schools private are eligible to participate in the program. In additional, libraries, independent of higher education institutions (and not tied to a school system), are eligible for discounts as well.
